That’s probably what was needed given the damage the actual SimCity did but it does mean that Cities: Skylines can seem rather clinical and unwelcoming. More than anything, Cities: Skylines is about the simple joy of building. This all seems to be purposeful though, and again a throwback to the series’ roots. No natural disasters is one thing, but unlike the reboot buildings aren’t constantly burning down and as long as you’re paying them the police usually have a reasonable grasp of crime in the city. The flispide to all this power and flexibility though is that Skylines offers little in the way of defined challenge. Skylines also address the SimCity reboot’s problem of unnecessarily small size restrictions, with your city able to spread out to a massive 36 square km if you choose to buy all the plot extensions. (Colossal Order are Finnish, so the game is often more liberal than the American-made SimCity – if you want it to be that is.) Policies can be applied to the whole city as well and cover everything from whether you can smoke or not to the local farming laws, and even recreational drug use – as well as the more obvious stuff like taxes.
